The Latest Spiral News |
. . .from Mexico and the Middle East
The SDi Level Two course on Natural Design last March, in Santa Barbara, highlighted two international projects in Mexico and the Middle East as case studies.
The MacroMemetics focus in Mexico is being led by Roberto Bonilla Nuñez and Karina Eichner. (visit the Center for Human Emergence CHE Mexcio for details.) Roberto completed significant coursework at Adizes Graduate School towards his Ph.D. and began working with Don Beck to mesh Adizes and Spiral Dynamics applications directly about 7 years ago. Karina brings a rich background in psychology and counseling, and a significant networking capacity around the presidential office in Mexico City. Involved in the project are:
- University constituents: including a positive response from the Rector of Monterrey Tech (Dr. Alberto Bustani Adem) and several university presidents. Monterrey Tech has 50+ campuses with over 100,000 students, is privately funded, and has a massive cyber university outreach. They intend to reach out to the entire Latin American context.
- The media: A group of movie and television producers sought out a meeting to offer their professional talents to use Spiral Dynamics conceptual models in full-length movies, television dramas, and other media-rich events to promote emergence in the many Mexican cultures. They felt they could bring some highly visible Mexican actors to the table.
- The teachers union: The Mexican Teacher's Union (1.4 million teachers) is now engaged. They would like to intentionally re-design education and training for 110 million Mexicans in the country plus 30 million who are now living outside their borders. They are keenly aware that the continued drain of intellectual capital will be devastating to their future.

In the Middle East, the Build Palestine Initiative has really taken off. While there has been ongoing work in Israel for over a year, the Israeli initiatives are separate. Don says,
"Obviously, the problems stem from the history and contemporary dance between the two, and of course we are quite aware of their interconnectedness. We anticipate a significant opportunity to develop approaches for Arab youth in general throughout the Middle East in 2008, all sponsored by Arab leaders and resources. We are certainly not naive, yet we understand the vast potential for transformational shifts in that part of the world."
The local Arab community demonstrated significant interest as 42 district and committee representatives of Fatah came to a special 2-day training on Spiral Dynamics by Dr. Beck in January. The invitation was forwarded by Nafiz Rifai, a highly respected Fatah leader and Chair of the Bethlehem University Alumni Student Association. Leading this initiative, Elza Maalouf is creating ongoing opportunities for emergence in Palestine, as her websites will demonstrate (visit the Center for Human Emergence, CHE Middle East). Elza is skillfully working with a number of young people and others from Lebanon, Syria, the Palestinian Territories and Kuwait who wish to break from the patterns in their society.
Another Fatah training, with 180 members expected to attend, is scheduled for May. Elza said,
"I do not suggest here that this is an easy process, or that what we are offering is 'the solution' to a 4000 year conflict. However, a Fatah district leader told us that seeing Don come to embrace their hopes and dreams while giving them practical and realistic solutions was profound."

The next 6-day Spiral Dynamics Certification in Level 1-2 in Santa Barbara, California, presented by Dr. Don E. Beck, will be October 29-November 3rd, 2007. (Halloween should be quite interesting, knowing Don's sense of humor!) For seminar details, special discounts, and a Registration Form, click on Learn More... at the bottom of this article. Below are a few photos from the training this past March in Santa Barbara.
Above are Darrell Gooden and Bjarni Jonsson, both Adizes Graduate School students who have almost completed the Ph.D. program. Darrell presents an Adizes conceptual foundations overview to the Spiral Dynamics group as a regular component of the Level 2 training. Bjarni came from Iceland to speak with Dr. Beck and Dr. Adizes about his dissertation, and to attend an Adizes seminar later in the week.
Below are the Pacifica Conference Center grounds (top), and Dr. Don E. Beck interactively demonstrating evolving authority and communication structures in societal and organizational contexts.

Some folks think vacationers come back to Santa Barbara just to visit with Frank! If you are coming to the 6-day SDi Certification training this fall, call Frank and his wife Linda at the Inn at East Beach for hotel reservations and ask for our special, discounted weekly rate!
